HUBBALLI/BENGALURU: A Hubballi court on Friday granted conditional bail to kar sevak Srikanth Poojari, whose arrest on December 29 in connection with a 31-year-old arson case had set off a fierce slugfest between Congress and BJP for more than a week.Poojari is expected to be released by Saturday evening, said his lawyer Sanjeev Badaskar.
Poojari, a right-wing activist from Channapet in Hubballi, was accused of setting shops on fire during the riots that broke out in the city following the Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya in 1992.
BJP held protests in several parts of the state, condemning Poojari’s arrest.
BJP leader R Ashoka, who led the state-wide protest, blamed Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah for the arrest.
JD(S) state president HD Kumaraswamy, too, termed Poojari’s arrest “illegal”.
However, home minister G Parameshwara hit out at BJP, accusing it of blowing up the issue to carry out a false propaganda.
