Coimbatore: The Chettipalayam police on Thursday evening arrested a 41-year-old woman and her lover for murdering a 32-year-old woman for her gold chains at her residence at Ambedkar Nagar here on December 30.
An investigation officer identified the arrested duo as Chandra Jothi, a native of Sholayar Nagar in Valparai, and her lover K Suresh, 39, of Ayakudi in Perambalur district.Separated from their families, they were residing together in a rental house at Kottur near Anaimalai in Coimbatore district.
According to the officer, the Saravanampatti police had arrested the couple on August 29, 2022, for robbing an elderly woman of her gold ornaments. “Jothi was lodged in the special prison for women on the premises of the city central prison, where she befriended B Dhanalakshmi, 32, a physiotherapist from Ambedkar Nagar on Podanur Road, who was arrested by the Big Bazaar Street police almost the same time for running a sex racket.”
The duo, he said, came out on bail after spending around 15 days in jail. “Later, Jothi stayed at Dhanalakshmi’s house for four days and came to know that she was in possession of gold chains weighing eight sovereigns and a few lakh rupees. Dhanalakshmi was found murdered when her lover S Bala Esakkimuthu, 28, with whom she was in a live-in relationship, returned home from work. A driver with the city corporation, he found that Dhanalakshmi’s gold chains and mobile phone were missing from the house.
He alerted the Chettipalayam police, who registered a case and collected CCTV footage, with the help of which they zeroed in on the preparators. “We arrested the duo on Thursday evening. They smothered Dhanalakshmi to death with an intention of stealing her gold chains and cash,” the officer said.
