Bhubaneswar: One person was injured in an exchange of fire with police at Kenghati village near Jayantpur under Sambalpur Sadar police station limits on Saturday evening. The injured was identified as Jacob (23) of Laxmipur, Koraput. He was arrested.
Acting on a tip-off of criminals’ presence in Kenghati, a team from Sadar police raided the place to bust the gang.
While the team was trying to apprehend the criminals, they opened fire on police, sources said.
Police said they have received information about 12 to 13 people, who have arrived in Sambalpur to commit crimes in financial institutions and large business hubs. Prior to this incident, they visited the town to locate targets.
Last night, the gang entered a liquor shop by breaking the roof and Rs 3.2 lakh cash after assaulting the salesman with sharp weapons and firearms, said IIC of Sadar police station Subrat Panigrahy. Police have also arrested 12 members of the gang after the encounter. All are from Koraput and Rayagada districts. Police also seized two country-made pistols, two big knifes and two iron rods from them. tnn
