Guwahati: To promote sustainable and eco-friendly transportation, the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) launched ‘Baayu’ — an app-based electric bike taxi service — the first fully electric and decentralized bike taxi service in the country on Sunday.
Apart from initiating zero-emission bike taxi and delivery services, the ‘Baayu’ service aims to generate over 5,000 livelihood opportunities for driver-partners in Assam by supporting them with electric vehicles, insurance, training, skill development and operating licenses.The initiative will save 29,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually and it is also poised to save Rs. 73 crores annually on fuel costs.

Taxi and tourist bus drivers will have meetings with authorities to discuss necessary arrangements for taxis and tourist buses in Ayodhya. Training will be provided to make drivers more sensitive towards visitors and ensure compliance with safe driving practices. Interceptor vehicles will assist tourists, while transport teams will monitor road safety issues such as overloading and overcharging.

Rivian Automotive’s fourth-quarter deliveries fell short of market estimates, declining by 10% to 13,972 vehicles. Analysts from Visible Alpha had anticipated a figure of 14,430. The company faces challenges from heightened competition, including Tesla’s Cybertruck, and the impact of elevated interest rates on the demand for its electric vehicles, such as the Rivian R1T pickup truck. The surge in interest rates has made electric vehicles less affordable, resulting in increased monthly payments.
