Hyderabad: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (JNTUH) may have to wait till April/May to hold the 109th Indian Science Congress (ISC) as plans to conduct the prestigious event in February may not work out.
JNTUH, which has already written to state government and department of science and technology (DST) seeking required permissions and funding to host the event, has not yet received any response from DST, which is the single-biggest funding agency behind the event. The state, however, is said to have responded positively.
ISC was supposed to be hosted by Lucknow University (LU) in 2024. However, LU backed out of hosting duties and the event was shifted to Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Jalandhar. DST, meanwhile, announced its withdrawal from the 2024 edition alleging ‘financial irregularities’ and ‘unilateral decision’ by a few office-bearers of ISCA in shifting the venue from LU to LPU. In December 2023, LPU informed ISCA that it wouldn’t be able to host the event, which was scheduled to be held between January 3 and 5. That’s when the ISCA approached JNTU-H.
The event, which is now indefinitely deferred, might be held after Lok Sabha elections. “Unless we get a reply from DST next week or so, we won’t be able to conduct the event in February,” a JNTUH official said, adding that they were following due procedures to get permissions and sending all the communication to DST through ISCA office in Kolkata.
“The next best option is to conduct the event in April or May,” the official added and pointed out that the dates of the event would be decided by DST as the Prime Minister is expected to take part in the inauguration of the conference.
The varsity officials said that at this stage, it was not clear how much budget the state government would be sanctioning for the event. “state government said that it will support us in conducting the event. But we don’t know how much will be sanctioned. We asked for 50 crore as we want to have about 8,000 to 10,000 papers presented at the event. Based on the budget, we will bring down the number to 5,000. We will also be planning to raise funds from industry and affiliated colleges,” the official said and added that they were planning to organise events at JNTU’s Sultanpur campus as it has resources to accommodate about 500 to 1,000 people there.
