Guwahati: Dense fog and sharp fall in the water level of Brahmaputra river have been affecting connectivity between Majuli, the island district of Assam, and Jorhat for the last seven days with several ferries being cancelled.
A total of nine ferries between Majuli and Nimatighat in Jorhat were cancelled due to dense fog by the IWT on Sunday. “The visibility was extremely poor due to fog.In this condition, ferries cannot be operated as there are a lots of risks. Moreover, there is a fall in the water levels also, due to which there is a huge chance of the ferries getting stuck in the sand. So, the trouble has been doubled now,” said Hanif Noorani, inland water transport director, Assam.
He added that the situation has been the same for the last seven days. However, he said traditional marine engine boats are operating between Majuli and Jorhat for commuters. “But, these boats cannot carry vehicles,” he added.
As far as safety is concerned on the marine engine boats, the director said the boats are safe for the passengers. He added that all safety measures including life jacket facilities for the passengers are in place on these boats. IWT is minutely monitoring the operation of the ferry service and marine engine boats so that no untoward incident take place.
