Guwahati: The third edition of the Assam Book Fair recorded a sale of nearly Rs 4 crore till Sunday, in nine days. The fair that started on December 29 is being held at the Assam Engineering Institute’s playground and will culminate on January 9, 2024.
The secretary of Assam publishers and book sellers’ association, Dhiraj Goswami told TOI that books worth over Rs 3.75 crore have been sold in the first nine days of the fair, which is over 30 to 35% more compared to the previous years during the same period.
Last year a sale of over Rs 6 crore was recorded. Prior to that in 2022, sale of over Rs 5 crore was recorded in the first edition of the book fair.
Goswami expressed hope that this year’s sale has a possibility to break all the previous records. He said, “Among all the editions of the book fair we have been a part of till date, this year has witnessed the highest footfall.” However, Goswami said this year, the suspension of work by the motor unions on January 5, adversely affected the sales.
The secretary of the publication board of Assam, Pramod Kalita said the readers have been preferring non-fiction books. Kalita further said irrespective of the languages, good responses have been received for all books. “According to sellers, books by Bangladeshi and English publishers from Delhi, are also in demand,” Kalita added.

In 2023, city malls recorded highest footfall but slightly lower sales than previous years
Malls in Kolkata had record footfall in 2023, with Acropolis generating the highest revenue. City Centre malls saw higher footfall but not higher revenues due to cine-goers who didn’t shop. South City had a good year with higher footfall but slightly lower revenue. Quest experienced a 10% decrease in footfall and sales, but is undergoing an upgrade. The retail industry expects a slow down nationwide and apparel stores are under pressure in Kolkata and north India due to a late onset of winter. The industry is preparing for a long haul with the upcoming general elections, anticipating a surge in sales after the results.
