Hyderabad: Speaking on the need to stop violence against women, experts said that 38% of Indian women across all strata are affected by violence. Dheera, an initiative that was launched at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Congress in 2016, has been advocating it to sensitise young girls, women, obstetricians and gynaecologists and involve other stakeholders from all sectors.
“We sensitise our Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) members to guide and help the woman in distress because often the first point of contact for a woman is a gynaecologist. We started a two hour online course to sensitise children in the age group of 9 to 11. Currently we covered almost 3,700 schools till date,” International federation of gynaecology and obstetrics president Prof S Shantha Kumari said.
“In Hyderabad there were 13000 cases of violence against women, especially crime, but over 50% of these women believe that violence against them is okay. That is the kind of thought process we need to break,” said Dr Ddharaniikota Ssuyodhan.tnn
