BHUBANESWAR: Water pollution remains a cause for concern in the city with households, apartments and several commercial establishments releasing sewage into open drains, leading to degrading quality of the city’s surface and groundwater sources.
According to civic body norms, sewage should be released into the underground sewerage network of the city and if not, it should be kept in individual septic tanks and should be emptied only through the registered vacuum trucks. These trucks, called cesspool vehicles, should then take the collected sewage to the faecal sludge management facility where it is treated before being released into water bodies. But in the absence of proper enforcement activities, sewage is being released into open drains by the entities.
“Government authorities are the ones who should implement the prescribed guidelines since it is not possible for a layman in general to know these. Repeated awareness and enforcement are the keys to deal with the issues,” environmentalist Bijay Mishra said.
Bomikhal resident Jaydev Rath said that he calls the cesspool vehicles whenever the septic tank in his house gets full. “There are bigger apartments in my locality though who used motor pumps to drain the water from their septic tanks. They release the water directly in the open drains. I tried to raise the issue but the authorities often turned a deaf ear,” Rath, a retired government employee, said.
“We are taking action against those who are releasing sewage water into the open drains. People can lodge complaints on such violation with us through our helpline and social media channels and we will take action accordingly,” Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation mayor Sulochana Das said.
