Hospital deaths: Cong, BJP demand action, compensation | Bhubaneswar News – Times of India

Bhubaneswar: Congress student wing members on Monday threw eggs at the official residence of health minister Niranjan Pujari, protesting against three deaths allegedly caused by an explosion triggered by an air conditioner compressor at Hi-tech Hospital on December 29. Protesters demanded revocation of the hospital’s licence and arrest of its chairman Tirupati Panigrahi.
“We demand Rs 50 lakh compensation for the next of kin of the deceased. The government should take strict action,” said president of Congress student wing Yasser Nawaz.
The BJP in a press conference demanded a judicial probe. It said the hospital did not have a burn unit to treat such patients but admitted the mechanics who had severe burns. “The hospital has violated clinical establishment norms,” said BJP spokesperson Anil Biswal.
Commissionerate police are probing the incident and have said they will look into all the angles including the possibility of the explosion triggered by compressor gas.
On Saturday, Dilip Samantray, who sustained burn injuries and was declared dead on the day of the explosion by hospital authorities, died. The hospital had earlier identified Jyoti Ranjan Mallick as Dilip. Jyoti died on December 30.
The hospital has said Dilip, Jyoti, Sritam Sahu and Simanchal Biswal had been called to repair the AC. The first to die of burn injuries was Sritam. Simanchal is under treatment and will be interrogated by police.
Panigrahi said the hospital was not involved in any irregularities. “We provided the service,” he said in a press conference.
