Gurgaon: GMDA is planning to build a library-cum-amphitheatre in Sector 52A’s Tau Devi Lal Biodiversity Park. The structure will be spread across 1,500sqm and will be able to accommodate 100 visitors.
GMDA officials said they aim to create a space within the biopark where people can socialise and promote reading, art and culture. At present, the park is mostly frequented by walkers.
“The project will be undertaken as part of our social infrastructure development plan.We will be developing a library-cum-amphitheatre, which will provide a peaceful space for reading. It will be spread across 1,500sqm with ample seating space and a cafeteria for visitors. It can also be utilised for events like book launches or group discussions. The purpose of developing such infrastructure is to provide modern spaces for communities where they can read or socialise. We will engage an agency to provide books and carry out maintenance of the facility,” a senior GMDA official said.
Once implemented successfully, the project could be replicated in other parts of the city, the official added.
With the closure of Epicentre — Gurgaon’s only cultural centre — in 2016, there is hardly any space in the city for communities to gather and participate in social and cultural activities. There are three amphitheatres in the city — one each in Aravali Biodiversity Park in DLF 3, Leisure Valley in Sector 29 and Kamla Nehru Park in Sadar Bazar — but these spaces don’t have adequate amenities for visitors. MCG had earlier proposed to build a cultural complex in Sector 53, but the project is yet to take off.
Suman Sharma, a resident of Rail Vihar, said she enjoys classical dance and music and frequently used to visit Epicentre with her family. “Now, there is hardly any space for art enthusiasts. While Delhi has ample space for artists and art lovers, Gurgaon doesn’t offer much. If government agencies are now focusing on providing such spaces, the move is more than welcome,” she added.
