‘More Panaji roads to shut to finish smart city works by Jun’ | Goa News – Times of India

Porvorim: Goa government on Wednesday set May 31 as the revised deadline for completion of all ongoing works in Panaji under the Smart Cities Mission. Some city roads will be closed to expedite the works.
“I will personally monitor the works on a day-to-day basis,” revenue minister and Panaji MLA Atanasio Monserrate told reporters after attending a review meeting convened by chief minister Pramod Sawant to discuss the status of the smart city works with the departments concerned, at Mantralaya, in Porvorim, “I will see that by May 31 Panaji city is cleared of all this mess.I have taken the responsibility upon me,” he said.
Monserrate said that some of the city roads will be closed for vehicular traffic so as to ensure that the works can be expedited and the May 31 deadline is met by the contractors executing the works.
Earlier, as per the directions of central government, June was the deadline to complete the ongoing works.
Monserrate blamed former managing director of Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL) Swayandipta Pal Choudhary, and ‘consultant friends’ appointed by former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar for the current mess in the smart city works. “We are suffering because of the mess created in the city by them. We are trying to create infrastructure, they built bridges but did nothing for the city. Find out who was the MLA for 25 years and show me what development works he carried out,” the revenue minister said.
“Consultants who took crores of rupees are not seen on the site. Had that amount been spent wisely we could have built two bridges. Footpaths which I got built in Taleigao in 2002 have not sunk till date. I stood there and got the work done. I have not taken commission from anyone. Consultants are commission agencies. Why do we need consultants when we have senior PWD engineers with 35 years of experience? Why are we not relying on our own people,” he said.
