BENGALURU: A gang of three kidnapped a 27-year-old carpenter from Ullala Main Road for ransom on December 25, attacked him with a knife, and took him to Kundapur, Udupi. However, their captive managed to escape when the trio stopped their car to buy booze.
The incident was initially reported to Kundapur police. The victim, Kishan Kumar, a resident of Kommaghatta near Kengeri, returned to Bengaluru, underwent treatment for his injuries, and lodged a complaint last week.Police suspect the gang was also behind the kidnapping of a 43-year-old man missing since December 30. Initially, the gang had targeted Kumar’s employer Sanjay Kumar Pandit. Both Kumar and Pandit are from Bihar. Pandit is an interior design contractor executing works across the state.
According to a complaint filed by Pandit, he received a phone call from an unknown number around 2.30pm on December 24. Saying he needed some work done, the caller wanted to meet Pandit. The caller also sent him location details around 5.30pm, but Pandit was in Kundapur, Udupi, on some other work.
Around 9.30am the next day, Pandit received a call from the same number. Pandit told the caller he would be sending his assistant – Kumar – to the location as he was still out of town. Kumar met the caller near a hotel on Ullala Main Road. Then, three men kidnapped Kumar. Two of them bundled him into a car while the third rode a scooter. They took him to an isolated place in Maruthi Nagar and demanded Rs 10,000 ransom. When Kumar told them he didn’t have cash on him, they stabbed him in the hand with a knife and asked him to call Pandit and arrange a sum of Rs 1 lakh.
They took Kumar’s phone and found only Rs 290 balance in his account. The trio transferred the money through a digital payment application. Later, they drove Kumar to Kundapur. On the way, they allegedly assaulted him and refused to give him water and food. The trio stopped the car in front of a liquor store to buy liquor. Kumar used the break to escape by jumping from the car’s window. One of the miscreants sitting in the vehicle stabbed his hand with the knife again. Kumar cried out for help and as people started rushing towards the car, the trio sped away. With the help of locals, Kumar met Pandit. He returned to the city and filed a police complaint on January 3.
Juvenile nabbed
Pandit, who had been leaving his bike for repair at a garage in Kommaghatta for almost 10 months, recently stopped doing so as he wasn’t happy with the mechanic’s work. The person who had called Pandit over phone had introduced himself as the mechanic from the same garage.
Police have detained a juvenile from among the trio. But he is tight-lipped about his associates and claims to know nothing about the reason for the kidnap.
