Nagpur: It was a historic moment at Nagpur railway station when the app-based cab service was flagged off on Wednesday after a formal ribbon-cutting by a passenger duo, who was given the impromptu honour by the divisional railway manager (DRM), Nagpur division, Tushar Kant Pandey.
The Times of India has been leading a campaign to launch the cab aggregator service to alleviate the trauma of passengers, who were forced to walk long distances with luggage to avail of a cab.Milind Mirapure, 32, and his mother-in-law, Chanda Wamankar, 55, who were the first beneficiaries of the facility, got a courtesy free ride to MP bus stand after the inauguration.
It was a symbolic rollout of the service since majority drivers were part of the strike against the proposed hit-and-run Central law, but they marked their presence at the aggregator booth to resume the facility.
The cab service, now available near the escalator outside Platform No. 1, was earlier wound up within months of operation due to unresolved issues. Though the tender for resumption of service was issued in November last year, the Railways encountered opposition from pre-paid auto drivers. The Times of India had exposed the alleged nexus of the auto mafia with security personnel and the parking violations in the station premises.
DRM Tushar Kant Pandey, who was present with senior divisional commercial manager Ashutosh Shrivastava, Railway Protection Force senior divisional security commissioner and SP, Government Railway Police Akshay Shinde, said, “Passengers arriving in Nagpur will now have multiple transport options to reach their destinations.”

This long-pending demand from railway passengers has been fulfilled by the commercial department. Passengers can book and board cabs from a designated place on the west side of the station premises. The service is a citizen-centric initiative and signifies a big transformation in passenger services.

Cabs Break Free Of Auto Mafia, TOI Steers Rollout
The Times of India’s sustained campaign to launch cab services at Nagpur railway station by dismantling the stranglehold of illegal autorickshaw drivers has succeeded. The app-based cab aggregator scheme will be inaugurated outside the railway station, providing a basic service for passengers. The launch will be symbolical due to the transporters strike, but the service will commence after the strike ends. The breakthrough was achieved after TOI’s crusade against government red-tape, illegal auto drivers, and the inaction of RPF and police.
