MUMBAI: A finance executive from Dubai suffered blurred vision in the left eye in a freak accident earlier this month in Kandivli when the lid of a soda bottle struck him. The soda stall operator, Vishwanath Singh, has been arrested, police said.
Siddhesh Sawant (26) was at a soda stall where Singh was popping bottles open.
Sawant arrived in Mumbai on December 23 last year to spend the holidays with his friends and family. On January 6, two friends asked him to hang out with them in Malad. After chatting and visiting a few locations, the group decided to head to Mahavir Nagar in Kandivli for a snack around 7.30pm.
According to the FIR, Sawant placed an order for three sodas at a soda stall. Singh was shaking the soda bottles vigorously before popping them open. He had opened two bottles and poured out the drink into glasses. While popping open the third bottle, its metal lid flew and struck Sawant in the left eye. Sawant suffered internal bleeding and couldn’t see properly. He was in severe pain. His friends rushed him to an eye hospital in Kandivli, where he could get treatment within 20 minutes.
Vision in his left eye has been impacted and he will have to undergo a few more checkups to find out when his vision will be fully restored. He will also need to wear spectacles.
“My flight back to Dubai was scheduled within 36 hours. I had no option but to cancel it,” said Sawant. “Singh apologised and offered to compensate me financially. But I don’t intend to accept any money from him as he did not hurt me intentionally,” he said.
Kandivli police registered a case against Singh under Section 337 of IPC (rash or negligent act endangering human life or personal safety) on January 7 and took him into custody.
