Coimbatore: State information technology minister Dr Palanivel Thiaga Rajan on Wednesday inaugurated the new building of Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) at Kalapatti East in the city. The three-storeyed modern building occupies 13,000sqft of space.
This is officially the second branch of the Coimbatore chapter. While 15 chapters of ICSI are functional in South India, Tamil Nadu houses three chapter offices and a regional office.
The minister said the new building would help the student community in Erode, Tirupur and the Nilgiris districts and other neighbouring states. “Coimbatore is a very industrious town, a production powerhouse of Tamil Nadu and a very civic-minded society in terms of manufacturing, service and education.”
The minister said there was a strong relationship between an institution and the quality of democracy. “The biggest role of democracy is to prevent accumulation of wealth by a few, while ensuring reasonable distribution of opportunities, wealth and other resources. Having an independent institution is the only way to achieve these goals efficiently.”
Pointing out that there was an uncertainty whether it was the growth that asks for better institutions, greater transparency and more accountability, or were it better institutions that drive economic growth, he said, “Institutions come first. Good, strong, independent and robust institutions can create better democracy, better growth prospects and better quality of life for citizens.”
Manish Gupta, national president of ICSI, said they had signed a memorandum of understanding with the defence ministry to provide skill development for Agniveer jawans.
He said they had introduced environmental, social and corporate governance; sustainability; artificial intelligence; cyber security; and endpoint detection and response courses.
