MUMBAI: In view of the tragedy last year at an award ceremony in which 13 people suffered heat stroke and lost their lives, the Raigad administration on Thursday announced setting up a 500-bed makeshift hospital in Ulwe, Raigad district. The decision comes a day ahead of the inauguration of the Nari Shakti app in Ulwe by Prime Minister Narendra Modi which is expected to draw more than 1.5 lakh women and activists.
This time around, the Raigad district administration is taking all possible steps to ensure the PM’s event passes off peacefully. Last year, the event was held at 11.30am, when summer was at its peak. The January 12 event is scheduled in the evening.
Raigad collector Yogesh Mhase said that as a precautionary measure, a 500-bed makeshift hospital has been set up very close to the venue of PM’s meeting.
Besides 500 regular beds, there will be 50 intensive care unit beds in the makeshift hospital,” said Mhase. In addition to this, the local administration will deploy 50 ambulances, including a few cardiac ambulances, for tackling medical emergencies, he added.
“We have mobilised a total of 500 doctors and paramedical staff for the purpose along with adequate stock of emergency as well as routine medicines. We have set up the hospital from our own resources, taking material from existing hospitals. No additional funds have been utilised for the purpose,” said Mhase.
A senior official said adequate number of volunteers will be deployed at the venue to offer snacks and drinking water to the people and more than 2,000 beds have been reserved in private hospitals in the vicinity. Further, five special parking lots, with a capacity of 1,200 vehicles each, have been created near the venue and three ambulances will be deployed near each parking lot.
On April 16 last year, 13 people suffered heat stroke and died at an event to present the prestigious Maharashtra Bhushan award to social worker Appasaheb Dharmadhikari at Kharghar in Raigad. The then state government had set up a one-man committee headed by then revenue secretary Nitin Kareer to probe into the incident. The outcome of the probe is not yet known, but the CM had declared a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased.
“We have learnt from the incident and will try our best to ensure no untoward incident takes place,” said the official.
