Corporation To Revive Nonfunctional Micro Composting Centres | Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: Corporation officials are all set to get five of the seven nonfunctional micro composting centres in the city functional soon.
While there are 36 micro composting centres in the city limits, two each in the west and north zones and one each in the central, east and south zones were not in a working condition for a while.
Corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran said five of the seven nonfunctional micro composting centres would be ready for operations in a week. “The centre in the north zone was facing manpower shortage, which we have addressed by finding a new contractor. The centres at Ukkadam and Sai Baba Colony will require more time to become operational again.”
Pointing out that 29 micro composting centres were functional presently, he said the units were processing about 83 tonnes of wet waste a day. “When five more centres become operational, about 100 tonnes of wet waste could be processed a day. We are considering the option of deploying advanced machines to increase the waste processing capacity of the centres,” Prabhakaran said.
He said the issue of sending mixed waste to the micro composting centres was addressed at the recent review meeting that they held. “We have directed sanitary workers to send only segregated waste to the centres to speed up the process.”
