Balangir: Balangir forest officials arrested two persons for illegal trade in leopard skin on Thursday.
The accused were identified as Mukesh Manhira of Kotgaon in Balangir district and Dibya Shankar Bagarty of Gahantapada in Boudh district. The accused were sent to judicial custody after their bail plea was rejected by the court of sub-divisional judicial magistrate (SDJM), Balangir.
Forest department sources said a raid was conducted on the house of Manhira on coming to know about his involvement in the illegal animal skin trade.
After interrogation he revealed that the deal for leopard skin will be sealed at Kantamal in Boudh district. He also provided information about Bagarty, who was a member of the racket.
A team was formed as per the instruction given by Nitish Kumar, divisional forest officer, Balangir to nab Bagarty from his village with the animal skin. Bagarty was nabbed and the skin was recovered from a paddy straw stack in Phatamunda village, said a forest official.
Forest officials are probing the case to unearth the chain of illegal trade.
