Chennai: State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed Tamil Nadu government to pay ₹1 lakh compensation to a farmer who it said had been illegally arrested and tortured in custody by a sub-inspector of police.
SHRC member V Kannadasan also recommended that the department initiate appropriate disciplinary action against sub-inspector P Balamurugan and recover the compensation from his personal account.
The issue pertains to a complaint filed by K Palani, a farmer from Pudukottai district, against Balamurugan, sub-inspector attached to Illupur police station in Pudukottai district.
According to Palani, a complaint was lodged with the director general of police against the Illupur police by Muthu, Chinnaiah and Chinnasamy from Erukkumanipatti village about non-action by police on a complaint lodged by them relating to a land dispute.
At that time, Palani also accompanied them. The Illupur police personnel were under the impression that the complainant was the reason behind the lodging of the complaint against the Illupur police and registered a false case against him.
Though the complainant obtained anticipatory bail in the case, on February 11, 2020, based on a complaint filed by Malathy, Balamurugan took him to the police station where he was tortured in custody.
Aggrieved, Palani approached the SHRC seeking action against the sub-inspector for violating his human rights.
Allowing the complaint, the commission passed the present order.
