GURGAON: MCG on Friday sent notices to 62 shop owners to remove encroachments in front of their shops in Sadar Bazar. The civic body, in its notice, warned them if the encroachments have not been removed, their shops will be sealed. This is the first time that the civic body has sent notices to traders to tackle encroachment in the area.
MCG has not been able to pedestrianise Sadar Bazar, which is one of the oldest markets of the city and is congested.
“We have started issuing notices to the traders who, despite repeated reminders, don’t remove encroachment done in front of their shops. They are given three days’ worth of time and if they don’t remove the encroachment, we will seal these 62 shops and action will be taken by the police as per law. This is being done to facilitate pedestrians and shoppers,” said Naresh Kumar, MCG joint commissioner for Swachh Bharat Mission.
According to MCG officials, while the encroachment upon roads leaves less space for pedestrians and disrupts traffic, it also poses a challenge in cases of fire incidents. In such heavily-encroached areas, it takes time for the emergency vehicles to reach the spot.
MCG officials said that their enforcement teams frequently conduct anti-encroachment drives in the market.
