The victim (54) is a homemaker and widow of a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) official. She had filed a complaint application with the cybercrime police and post verification of the same, the Kondhwa police registered an FIR on Wednesday.
A police official said, “The woman was visiting her sister’s place at Mohammedwadi during Diwali vacation when she got a call from the crooks, posing as public sector bank officials, to expedite process of husband’s pension. She handed over the phone to her brother in-law to understand the process, but he suspected the caller and disconnected the call.”
Later, the crooks called and lured the victim to download an application on her mobile phone to complete the formalities for starting pension. “The woman, believing them to be bank officials, did what they asked. Via this, the crooks accessed her account remotely,” the officer said.
The victimm stated in her complaint that the crooks transferred Rs 17.75 lakhs in eight transactions from her account to six different bank accounts. She realised she was duped after she procured a bank statement to find lakhs of rupees debited.
“She also realized she was tricked when the crooks refused to repay her money and stopped communicating with her. The cybercrime police have frozen the crooks’ bank accounts. We will send email to the victim’s bank to provide details of the financial transactions done by the crooks,” the official added.
The police filed an FIR under Section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.
