Udhagamandalam: Forest departments of Tamil Nadu and Kerala initiated a joint patrolling operations on Saturday along the interstate border areas in the Nilgiris.
The patrolling operation, slated for completion within a few days, was prompted by instructions from C Vidhya, the deputy director of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (core area), with an aim of fortifying security measures in the border regions of the Nilgiris forests.
Approximately 50 members, comprising the Mukurthi range forest field staff from Tamil Nadu and forest personnel from Silent Valley National Park in Kerala, form the joint team conducting the patrolling exercise.
“The teams will set up camps at strategic locations during the exercise to safeguard the forests and wildlife from potential intruders,” said a forest officer.
Concurrently, an assessment of the preventive measures in place to mitigate forest fires in the Mukurthi National Park area is being conducted, he added.tnn
