Vibrant Makar Sankranti Celebration in Jaipur with Kites, Firecrackers, and Lanterns | Jaipur News – Times of India

Jaipur: Be it an 8-year-old boy or a 50-year-old woman, everyone was engaged in flying and snapping kites during the day on Sunday. From terraces of houses to grounds of maidans, people across Jaipur were engaged in flying kites even if the official holiday for the Makar Sankranti was declared by the state government on Monday.
Some kite lovers were disappointed that the winds were not favorable for flying kites till the afternoon.“Winds are not favourable. Either kites are getting damaged or we are getting shoulder pain trying to fly them. I am hopeful that winds would be favourable in the afternoon,” said Anil Sharma, who was enjoying the kite festival at his ancestral home at Jat Kauen Ka Rasta in the walled city.
Better conditions came between 5pm and 6.30 pm. Innumerable kites dotted the sky of Jaipur during this time.
Men and women both were engaged in flying kites along with children, and traditional foods like daal ke bade, khiranand, pyaaz paneer ki sabzi, til ke laddoo, feeni, and tikkad added to the festivity.
Some people preferred to be at home but many visited their relatives in the walled city just to enjoy or capture on camera the charm of kite flying.
With music players, karaoke and loudspeakers, many were also into singing songs and doing live commentary of the snapping of kites. “I have sung a few songs on loudspeaker through karaoke and enjoyed it while my two sons were engaged in kite flying,” said Sumesh Mishra, a resident of Bapu Nagar.
Apart from this, there were many who visited Jal Mahal Ki Paal where a kite festival was organized in which foreign tourists and others enjoyed the kite festival.
The day ended with bursting of firecrackers and releasing of lanterns in the sky. The festical is not yet over, though, as according to the priests of Jaipur, the punya kaal or auspicious time for Makar Sankranti is on Monday, and many will celebrate the festival then.
“Since winds were not favourable today and it is a holiday on Monday, we are hopeful that the charm of flying the kites will continue on Monday,” said Abdul Aziz, a wholesale dealer of kites at Haldiyon Ka Rasta.
