Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party has put in place “5-lakh vote yardstick” to shortlist candidates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Party strategists also want to use this same yardstick to coin the seat sharing formula with the alliance partners – primarily the Congress and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). However, will there be a consensus among the three on the issue is something that only time will tell. The 5-lakh vote yardstick recently found a mention by SP president Akhilesh Yadav during an interview with an online news channel.
Responding to a question on seat sharing with alliance partners, Akhilesh said by scanning results of the BJP candidates in past elections, it was noticed that their winning candidates secure 5 lakh plus votes. “Our target should be to field candidates who can secure 5 lakh plus votes,” he said. The same yardstick is also likely to be used while sharing seats with Congress and RLD.
“More than the number of seats or the particular constituency from where an alliance partner wants to contest, it will be about if the probable candidate can secure 5 lakh plus votes. That will surely be the broad criterion in shortlisting of candidate,” a party leader said.
Akhilesh had made it clear that the idea behind seat sharing should be to defeat the BJP. On a question that Congress wants a respectable number of seats in UP as leaders feel that agreeing to a smaller count will limit party’s expansion in the state, Akhilesh said there was hardly any time left for any party to talk or prepare about expansion.
“We are up against a party like the BJP which has a government at the Centre and in UP. A party which has put RSS minded people in key positions. A party which has a host of agencies and experts at its disposal. We should only think about defeating the BJP as there is hardly any time left for elections,” he had said.
He, however, reiterated that SP was ready to give seats to Congress more than what it will get from alliance partners in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Bihar. On Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, Akhilesh said if the yatra passes through Rae Bareli and Amethi and if the Congress invites him, he would join Rahul Gandhi there.
