Nagpur: Motorists had a harrowing time on city’s roads throughout Monday as traffic police had closed 12 flyovers on Makar Sankranti to avoid accidents due to descending kites and dangling nylon manja.
The flyovers were closed for traffic from 6am to 6pm. As a result, the traffic congestion spilled on to internal roads in adjoining areas. The worst affected roads were those which witnessed a surge in traffic movement due to closure of the Shaheed Gowari flyover.
The other bridges that remained shut included Sakkardara and Dighori flyovers, Golibar-Pachpaoli ROB, Mangalwari ROB, Dahi Bazaar ROB, Mehdibagh ROB, Ram Jhula Y-shaped flyover, Mankapur flyover, Sadar flyover, Narendra Nagar ROB and Wardha road double-decker flyover, leading to traffic snarls in Sitabuldi, Dhantoli, Sadar and to some extent Wardha road.
With the road between Rani Jhansi Square and Panchsheel Square already closed for repairing the bridge that had collapsed in September 23 deluge last year, traffic restriction on Shaheed Gowari flyover aggravated the problem as motorists diverted to roads in Dhantoli, Ramdaspeth and even West High Court Road.
“The closure of flyovers created major bottlenecks at Sadar and near Mecosabagh,” said a motorist C Abhishek, adding closure of Gondwana flyover caused major problems for traffic going from Kadbi Chowk to Byramji Town. Motorists then moved onto the Mangalwari flyover from Kadbi Chowk, due to which the stretch from the flyover landing to Residency Road resembled a slow-moving parking lot.
Closure of the flyover from Mankapur to Katol road /Kasturchand Park led to further chaos.
Traffic cops deployed on internal roads struggled to regulate the slow-moving vehicles. Encroachments and parking on roads added to the woes.
