Coimbatore: Cooking pongal on earthen pots at the break of dawn, wearing new clothes, and sharing sweets and sugarcanes with near and dear marked Pongal celebrations in the district.
Yuvraj, a resident of Annur, said, “Even before the sunup, we got ready wearing new clothes and started to prepare the pongal. The overflowing of pongal from the pots and the simultaneous rising of the sun denote blessing and prosperity. We invoke the blessing of the Sun God and then worship cattle.”
BJP district secretary Ganapathy K Durai praised farmers and cows while celebrating Pongal with his partymen. “Unlike other festivals, Pongal reminds us of the farmers’ contribution to the development of our country. The dairy industry plays a vital role in the country’s growth. Promoting the indigenous breeds is important. Millets and sugarcanes should be promoted in the markets,” he said.
