Guwahati: Congress leader and Lok Sabha member from Assam, Gaurav Gogoi, has demanded a probe into the lackadaisical approach of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) towards the critical road development projects going on in the state, which has been hindering the progress and jeopardising the safety and well being of the people of Assam.
In the letter to Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari on Friday, Gaurav wrote that the current condition of National Highway 37, which is a lifeline for the people of Assam, has reached a critical point, causing significant inconvenience to residents and commuters. “The rise in traffic volume, attributed to commercial activities, tourism, and regular transportation, has far outpaced the capacity of the road infrastructure, resulting in extensive wear and tear,” the letter read.
The Congress deputy leader at the Lok Sabha emphasised the Teok-Sivasagar section of the Numaligarh-Dibrugarh four-lane highway, which has remain underdeveloped, with frequent changes in contractors. The letter read, “National Highway 37 in Assam has become riddled with potholes and cracks, posing a serious threat to the commuters on the road. During the monsoon season, rainwater accumulates in the damaged areas making it challenging for drivers to gauge the depth of the potholes.”
The letter also highlighted the irregularities that has emerged regarding the compensation and land acquisition process for the Parokhuwa to Lahorijan stretch of the 113km long four-lane National Highway 29 in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district. “It has come to light that several fake beneficiaries had been included in the 3D notification and had received payment through illegal means, using fabricated land record, which has caused significant harm to genuine landowners who have been deprived of rightful compensation,” the letter said.
