Pune: Eco-activists plan to perform a pooja at the Ram Zhara on January 21 to highlight how it has become one of the most polluted streams in Pimpri Chinchwad.
The stream passes from Chikhali and joins the Indrayani river. It has been a cause of concern for a long time now, due to untreated effluents released from warehouses and small industrial units located in the Kudalwadi area into its flow.
Prakash Jukantwar of the Indrayani Jalamitra Foundation said they have chosen the date to precede the Ram Mandir consecration ceremony in Ayodhya on January 22.He added “Some 26 NGOs and social groups will organise this event.”
Prashant Raul of the Green Army said there is a mythological belief that the stream gets its name from when Lord Ram, while passing through, hit an arrow at its origin to start its flow. “We have formally asked officials of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute to try and confirm this claim. The stream also finds mention in an abhang by Sant Tukaram Maharaj as it is claimed he often drank water from it while passing the spot,” said Raul.
He added, “There was a time when the stream was the most important source of water for people living around it, but today PCMC is allowing release of untreated sewage water into it. Hazardous chemicals are also released into it from illegal industries and scrap warehouses in the area,” he said.
“We have a functional STP with 3 MLD capacity to treat water on the Ram Zhara. Other measures are also being undertaken,” said PCMC joint city engineer Sanjay Kulkarni.

Sculptor Arun Yogiraj sought forgiveness for unintentional mistakes during the idol’s carving. Trustee Anil Mishra and saints participated in rituals, praying for the ceremony’s success. Yagyashala rituals are performed in a secluded part of the temple complex.
