BENGALURU: A male passenger on a Mumbai-Bengaluru SpiceJet flight was trapped inside a toilet for nearly 100 minutes early Tuesday as the door lock allegedly malfunctioned.
He was rescued after engineers broke open the loo door at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) here. Stuck in the toilet, especially during the landing, the passenger remained in a state of shock.KIA sources said the incident unfolded on flight SG-268 that took off from Mumbai airport at 2am Tuesday. The flight was scheduled to take off at 10.55pm Monday. The details of the passenger could not be immediately ascertained. SpiceJet was yet to comment on the incident.
“It was known that the passenger on 14D seat had gone to the toilet soon after the takeoff and the seatbelt signs went off. Sadly, he got trapped inside as the toilet door malfunctioned,” said a ground staffer at KIA.
The passenger’s frantic calls alerted the crew on board the SpiceJet flight, who also tried to open the door from outside. “The poor man flew from Mumbai to Bengaluru inside the toilet and, shockingly, landed trapped inside the tiny lavatory,” another Bengaluru airport official added.
With crew mid-air realising there was no option to open the lavatory door, one of the air hostesses penned a note on brown paper in capital letters stating: “Sir we tried our best to open the door, however, we could not. Do not panic. We are landing in a few minutes, so please close the commode lid and sit on it and secure yourself. As soon as the main door is open, engineer will come.” She slid the note under the lavatory door to comfort the trapped flyer.
The flight touched down at 3.42am Tuesday. Immediately, engineers boarded the plane, broke open the door and rescued the man after a two-hour ordeal. The passenger was immediately taken for first aid. “The passenger was totally traumatised due to claustrophobia,” the officer said.
