CHENNAI: Leisure hospitality company Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India Limited (MHRIL) will invest Rs 800 crore to set up three greenfield resorts in Tamil Nadu.
The company has shortlisted locations like Kadapakkam on the East Coast Road (ECR) near Chennai, the pilgrimage centres of Kumbakonam and Rameswaram and the hill stations of Kodaikanal, Valparai and the Nilgiris for its investments over the next five to six years.
The new projects would create employment for more than 1,500 people, a statement from the company said.
With this, MHRIL will double its footprint in Tamil Nadu. Club Mahindra is already operating resorts in Ooty and Kodaikanal.
During the recent Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meeting 2024 in Chennai, MHRIL signed an MoU with the state government for this investment.
This would be the second-largest investment by the company following the Rs 1,000 crore investment in Uttarakhand last year, the statement said. “It is part of the plans to increase the room inventory from 5,000 to 10,000 by 2030,” the company said.
As part of the efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, all the new resorts developed in Tamil Nadu would target to be champions of net zero energy, water and waste and in the process become role models for sustainable tourism in the state, the statement added.
