KOLKATA: The city remained chilly on Wednesday with the minimum temperature dipping to 13.4°C, a degree below normal, narrowing the gap between maximum and minimum temperatures to seven degrees. The Met office had earlier said there might be rain between Tuesday and Wednesday, but weather have revised the forecast, saying there was a high chance of Kolkata receiving some rain late on Wednesday and early on Thursday. The maximum temperature recorded on Wednesday was 20.3°C, six notches below normal.
“By the end of the week, the gap between maximum and minimum temperatures may fall to about four degrees,” said Regional Meteorological Centre director G K Das.
By Wednesday evening, a cyclonic circulation over UP was headed towards south Bengal, promising a spell of about 15mm in the city by Thursday morning.
On Monday and Tuesday, the maximum temperature hovered between 20°C and 21°C, five notches below normal. This is fairly atypical considering that the maximum has remained between 24°C and 25°C for most of December and reached 25.5°C last Wednesday. In the last 10 years, the maximum temperature in January has typically remained between 24°C and 26°C and inched towards 30°C in the last week.
The lowest maximum temperature for the month in recent years was 18°C on January 4, 2020. In the last two decades, the month’s lowest maximum temperature was 15.7°C, on January 6, 2004.
Winter generally sees a bridge of about 10 degrees between the maximum and minimum temperatures. The narrowing gap indicates a season change in the works. While the maximum is unlikely to fall significantly below 20°C, the minimum is likely to continue rising and may reach 18°C by the weekend.
On Thursday, the skies are likely to be overcast after the possible shower, and the maximum temperature is likely to remain at 20°C. The minimum may jump up to 15°C from 13.4°C on Wednesday.
