New Delhi: National Green Tribunal has issued a notice to Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) and National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) after taking cognisance of media reports that flowers and garlands offered in puja are thrown in polythene bags on the ghats of Yamuna and Ganga, which is polluting the rivers.
“News report reveals that the problem is very serious, and the riverbeds are much worse than the condition prevailing in the oceans,” NGT noted.
The tribunal said the media report raises substantial issue relating to compliance of the environmental norms prescribed in the scheduled enactments. “We deem it proper to implead member secretary, DPCC; member secretary, UPPCB, and chairman, NMCG, as respondents,” said the bench. NGT has also sought a report from the respondents.tnn
