The post fell vacant after former mayor Rakhi Gupta was declared disqualified by the State Election Commission on July 28, 2023. Gupta was directly elected by the electorates as the second mayor in 2022, succeeding Priya Devi, the first person to hold the post after Chhapra municipality was upgraded to a municipal corporation in 2017. But Priya Devi was elected by the ward councillors then. This time, however, only two woman candidates are in fray — former chairperson of erstwhile Chhapra municipality Sunita Devi and Chandni Prakash who is an engineer by qualification.
