Berhampur: A day after a nine-month-old boy was allegedly stolen from near the bus stand in Khallikote, Ganjam district, the baby was rescued by the police from Bhubaneswar on Thursday and united with his mother.
Police arrested a 45-year-old woman for allegedly kidnapping the baby. Police suspect the woman was trying to sell the boy to a childless couple for a hefty price. “The accused was identified as Prabhasini Sahu of Rangameru village in Ganjam district,” SP (Ganjam) Jagmohan Meena said.
On Wednesday, the baby went missing from near the bus stand when his mother and grandmother were resting for the night. They were to board a bus to Banina village, which they had missed.
The accused was sleeping close to them, on the veranda of a clinic near the bus stand. When the baby’s mother woke up in the morning, she found her son missing. They searched nearby areas, but could not find him. The baby’s grandmother lodged an FIR at Khallikote police station. “After screening the CCTV footage, we found out that the unknown woman had kidnapped the baby,” Meena said.
Police formed multiple teams to rescue the baby. They interrogated several people, including locals in and around Khallikote bus stand, the sister of the accused in Bhubaneswar and one of the friends of the accused’s husband at Sheragada.
She was finally found in an under-construction building in Sundarpada area of Bhubaneswar. Police said Sahu was apparently staying near Khallikote bus stand following a dispute with her husband.
