Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted permission to the Indian Secular Front (ISF) to hold a rally in front of the Victoria House at Esplanade on Sunday.
Justice Jay Sengupta while giving the permission imposed eight conditions on the rally organizers, specifying the time of the rally, the number of participants, the dais size and the number of vehicles for carrying supporters.
The court directed the ISF not to use foul language against anyone, or resort to violence and asked the organizers to submit names of four individuals who could be held responsible in the event of any untoward incident.
Justice Sengupta noted that the rally venue was the place where some people were killed in police firing on July 21, 1993. “This place has some significance which is why Trinamool holds a rally here,” he observed.
Taking the cue, advocate general Kishore Datta submitted: “This is a place of exception where only one rally is permitted in a year.”
Justice Sengupta asked him to show one reason why the place should not be given to the ISF. “If you have a problem with that place then no meeting should be allowed at that particular venue,” he said.
The advocate general suggested an alternative venue at Ramlila Maidan. “It is much better to have 1,000 people in front of Victoria House than having 5,000 people at Ramlila Maidan,” the court observed. The AG also prayed for a stay after the order was passed, but the court refused.
