New Delhi: Several grown trees on the construction site of a flyover in Anand Vihar are proving a challenge for the Public Works Department. There are at least five fully grown trees on the central verge of Road Number 56 under the flyover, which is under construction.
“We are in talks with the forest department regarding the trees that are in the project area.We are trying to save some of the trees which are directly under the flyover,” said a PWD official.
One of the trees is growing over the flyover in the middle of the carriageway, which is sometimes used by the workers to take shelter. “But the tree may be felled, otherwise it can affect the movement of traffic,” the official added.
A senior forest department official said that they were in conversation with PWD over the whether trees on the central verge and roadside would be felled or transplanted. We have also received a few complaints regarding some violations at the project site with respect to tree conservation and we are looking into them, the official added.
The deadline to complete the Anand Vihar flyover work has been shifted from Dec 2023 to April 2024 and the work is currently in progress on the elevated corridor, pedestrian subway and side ramps. The side ramps are being constructed for commuters to reach the flyover from different nearby colonies.
The delayed construction work of the six-lane flyover project has become a pain point for commuters. Traffic snarls are common in the area. However, once the new 1.4km-long flyover is completed, the entire stretch of Road No. 56 will be signal-free. People will then be relieved from the problem of traffic jams in Ramprastha Colony, Vivek Vihar and Shreshth Vihar.
