Crores To Restore Adyar Down Drain As Sewage Flows Into River | Chennai News – Times of India

CHENNAI: Metrowater spent 123.19 crore in the past four years to plug 39 sewage outfalls in Adyar river, construct pumping stations and sewage treatment plants. But on Friday, TOI saw a Metrowater line along Thiru Vi Ka bridge leaking sewage into the river.
The pipeline carries sewage from Mylapore, Ice House, Teynampet and Adyar to a pumping station on Brodies Castle Road. And this is not the first time it has burst, contaminating the Adyar. The pipeline had leaked sewage into the river in March 2019, Jan 2022, Dec 2023 after Cyclone Michaung and again now.
In January 2022, Metrowater replaced the old concrete sewer with a cast-iron pipe. But on December 6, 2023, the pipeline burst letting untreated sewage into the Adyar. One lane of Thiru Vi Ka bridge was cordoned off then.
On Friday, Ramesh, a flower vendor near the bridge, said, “This pipeline keeps leaking sewage into the river. I have seen it for more than a year.”
R Vijaikumar, Metrowater area engineer of Adyar, said these pipelines can corrode and leak. “We will fix the leak before midnight.”
Anti-corruption NGO Arappor Iyakkam’s convenor Jayaram Venkatesan said the government is the major polluter of rivers. “It shows that the authorities are not serious about the issue,” he said.
A few hundred metres off the bridge, a cattleshed on the banks of the Adyar near MGR Janaki College of Arts and Science for Women had a pipeline discharging cow dung and urine and other waste directly into the river. The cattleshed owners have ignored two notices from Greater Chennai Corporation, but the civic body is yet to act. Water resources department chief engineer (Chennai) K Asokan said: “We will file a police case against them.”
The college authorities said the well on the premises had become contaminated because of this, causing a health hazard to more than 6,000 students.
