NEW DELHI: The national capital experienced another cold morning on Sunday with temperatures dropping to single digits. This caused delays in several flights and trains, inconveniencing passengers. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that visibility at Delhi-Palam decreased from 400 meters at 2:00 am to 100 meters at 2:30 am on Sunday, and further reduced to 0 meters from 3:00 am onwards.The minimum temperature recorded in Delhi on Sunday morning was 8.5 degrees Celsius, according to IMD.
The IMD also stated in a post on X that a thick layer of fog was visible over the plains of north India, including Punjab, Bihar, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, northwest Rajasthan, and north Madhya Pradesh at 6:30 am. The weather department added that dense to very dense fog was observed in isolated areas of Delhi, North Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh, and West Madhya Pradesh.
Due to the dense fog conditions, nearly a dozen passenger trains to Delhi were delayed, including the Amritsar-Nanded Express, Puri-New Delhi Purushottam Exp, Ambedkarnagar-Katra, and Manikpur-Nizamuddin Express. Similarly, at Delhi airport, passengers experienced long wait times as flights were delayed by several hours. Some flights were even canceled, causing inconvenience to the travelers. Neha Beniwal, a passenger from Bahrain, shared her experience, saying, “My flight was delayed because of fog. It was supposed to land here at 4:45 am, but it landed at around 5:35 am.”
In response to the foggy conditions, Delhi airport authorities issued an advisory, urging passengers to contact their respective airlines for updated flight information. The IMD has also predicted very dense fog conditions until January 22, with foggy conditions likely to persist until January 27. People in Delhi were seen gathering around bonfires to keep themselves warm as the cold wave continued.
