Pune: Environment activists of Pimpri Chinchwad and members of the warkari community on Sunday performed a pooja at the Ram Zara stream in Kudalwadi area of Chikhali to raise issues related to pollution in the stream.
The stream is considered sacred among the warkaris. Activists also conducted a cleanliness drive here and urged the administration to take immediate steps to restore the stream.
Prashant Raul, a member of the Green Army, said the municipal corporation swung into action following their call to protest and a huge amount of garbage was removed in the last two to three days.“The civic body received over 150 complaints demanding a cleaning of this stream. However, untreated sewage water and chemicals are directly released into it today, which further goes to the Indrayani river,” Prashant said.
“For warkaris, it is an important stream because it is also believed the flow started after Lord Ram hit an arrow at its origin,” Vichar Sagar Maharaj Lahudkar, a member of the warkari community, told TOI.
Over 25 NGOs and organisations have joined hands to raise this issue.
Prakash Jukantwar of Jal Mitra foundation said, “Since the consecration ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya is scheduled for January 22 and we decided to organise pooja here on January 21, a large number of people joined us to clean the stream that gets its name after Lord Ram.”
