Ludhiana: Demanding filling up of vacant posts, the technical staff of the Northern Railway continued their protest near the Ludhiana railway station on Sunday. They also sought action against an official for harassing an employee.
As per the Northern Railway Men’s union there are 1,100 technician posts at diesel and electric sheds, of which 258 are vacant.
Shiv Dut, divisional secretary of NRMU, said, “Around 30% of the posts at the diesel shed and 10% at the electric shed have been lying vacant for many years. Instead of recruiting workers, the railway station administration shifted 72 technicians to electric shed from the diesel shed, which increased the workload of the latter’s already burdened staff.”
Ajay Kumar, a union leader, said, “We have an acute shortage of staff. Every day we have to do additional work of 258 technicians.”
He said they also sought action against a senior official who had harassed an employee for no valid reason.
A senior official of Northern Railway said efforts were being made to fill up the posts as soon as possible. tnn
