Finalisation of the new Metro routes effectively means scrapping Phase-II corridors announced by the previous BRS government. Chief minister A Revanth Reddy had earlier termed those routes as “not useful for majority of commuters”.
However, there was no clarity on how the government would fund the Metro expansion or set any timeline for completion of the new corridors.
On the directions of the CM, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has prepared a new route map of Metro rail in the identified areas.
Presently, Hyderabad Metro provides services in three corridors (Miyapur-LB Nagar, Jubilee Bus StationMGBS and Nagole-Raidurg) on a stretch of 69 km.
Metro corridors finalised, network to be expanded from 70km to 140km
With the addition of another 70 km, the Metro network in the city would expand to 140 km.
As per the new plan, the Metro network between JBS at Secunderabad and MGBS at Gowliguda would be extended up to Chandrayangutta crossroads in the Old City.
The four new corridors include — MGBS to Falaknuma (5.5 km), Falaknuma to Chandrayangutta (1.5 km), both under corridor-2, Nagole to LB Nagar and it would be extended to join the Metro line at Chandrayangutta, and from Mylardevpally P7 Road to the airport (29 km). And, from Mylardevpally to the proposed new high court at Rajendranagar (4 km), which would be under corridor-4.
The corridor-5 would be from Raidurg to US Consulate (Financial District — 8 km) via Biodiversity Junction, Nanakramguda and Wipro.
The corridor-6 would be from Miyapur to Patancheru via BHEL (14 km), while the corridor-7 would be from LB Nagar to Hayatnagar (8 km) via Vanasthalipuram.
“The main objective of the newly designed Metro rail connectivity is to provide public transportation to a greater number of people at a low cost. The earlier Metro rail network proposed by the previous government would have incurred huge expenditure and catered to fewer numbers of people compared to the new routes,” Revanth Reddy said.
The new government would fulfil its goal of providing Metro services to a large number of poor and middle class
