Hyderabad: Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) Ravi Gupta said that road accidents have become a major cause of death among the youth and accidents can be prevented through “engineering, enforcement, education, and emergency measures”. He was speaking on the occasion of Road Safety Month, which is being observed from January 15.
The DGP directed all district SPs and commissioners to make Road Safety Month a priority.He held a video conference with all unit officers. He said road accidents are increasing due to the increase in number of vehicles, lack of caution and factors such as not wearing helmets, not wearing seat belts, over speeding, using phones while driving. He said as per records, in 2022, 7,500 persons were killed in road accidents in Telangana where as 1.68 lakh persons died in the country.
The DGP directed that road safety clubs should be set up in areas near highways. He said district and commissionerate road safety bureaus should be set up in police offices. He said purchase of speed guns and breathalyzers through challan fine funds should be explored.
