Kolkata: A clash between two Chetla neighbourhoods late on Tuesday left at least eight injured. Two of them had to be hospitalised.
The trigger was an alleged foul that was committed when two local football teams were playing a match on Netaji’s birthday. Organizers and elders managed to bring the situation under control initially but a couple of hours later, the matter escalated as both sides came armed with sticks and bottles.
Police have denied use of bombs and claimed the injuries were minor.Cops are using CCTV footage to identify the main accused. “All of those involved are local residents who have been participating in similar tournaments in the past. Both sides, it seems, share a bitter rivalry though they have engaged in a free-for-all like this in the past. We are taking the help of community elders to stop any more flare-ups,” said a senior officer.
