Gurgaon: Trafic police issued an advisory on Wednesday prohibiting the entry of commercial vehicles, mainly trucks, in the city and Delhi in view of the upcoming Republic Day celebrations.
According to the advisory, medium and heavy goods vehicles will not be allowed to enter the two cities between Thursday 5pm to 1.30pm on Friday. It was issued a day after a major jam on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway on Tuesday due to restriction on entry of trucks in Delhi as as rehearsals were going on for the Republic Day parade.
“In order to ensure smooth traffic flow, and to minimize inconvenience to commuters, heavy vehicles will be diverted at checkpoints installed on NH-8,” DCP (traffic) Virender Vij said.
Heavy vehicles coming from the Jaipur side on NH-8 will be diverted at Pachgaon on KMP Expressway. Those starting within the city will be diverted to alternative routes at various points from Kherki Daula toll plaza, Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO Chowk and Shankar Chowk on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway. No trucks will be allowed to cross the Sirhaul border and enter Delhi.
Trucks will also not be allowed at MG Road and Kapashera border on Old Delhi-Gurgaon road. The vehicles, according to the officials, will be diverted before they could reach these points.
The restrictions enforced for Republic Day preparations had caught commuters unawares on Tuesday morning, grinding traffic to a halt on the Delhi-Gurgaon border during the rush hours and creating a 15km tailback all the way from Sirhaul border to Hero Honda Chowk. Traffic police on Tuesday had suspended three zonal officers for negligence.
