Haveri: A gang rape and moral policing case in Hangal taluk has garnered wide attention. Shockingly, seven accused in the case are exhibiting no guilt, justifying their actions solely based on religion.
While some others involved in the case express remorse, most lack awareness about the case registered under Section 376D of the IPC. Surprisingly, except for one, none have applied for bail.Police have arrested seven people directly involved in the gang rape and several others for abetting the crime.
“During interrogation, seven accused who allegedly raped the victim, have expressed no remorse about their act. They justified by saying they did everything solely for their religion. They said that they had earlier warned the victim not to mingle with people apart from the minority community. When she did not comply, they all raped her to punish her,” said a senior police officer investigating the case.
The officer added that some accused who have assaulted the woman and supported the gang rape expressed remorse. The have accepted their guilt in front of the investigation team, he said.
Among all those arrested, only Abdul Khadar Hanchinamani has applied for bail. Police are confident that bail would not be granted to any of the accused in this case.
Many gangs formed for
moral policing
Police have found that youths from the minority community had formed many gangs to conduct moral policing in the district. They were communicating using code words and team names in WhatsApp groups. Eagle, X, Y and Z groups were actively working on moral policing, and they had established networks, especially surrounding bus stops, hotels and markets.
“We have seized seven cellphones from the accused, and sent them for forensic testing. We are trying to recover all data from them. These group members and their network are always on the lookout for inter-faith couples and attacked them. The Akkialur and Byadagi moral policing incidents are similar, but it will be proved after investigation,” said a senior police officer.
