CHENNAI: Southern Railway would complete a host of doubling work and other infrastructure work in the coming months, said SR general manager R N Singh on Friday.
Unfurling the National Flag to mark Republic Day celebrations, Singh said Chennai Egmore-Beach fourth line would be completed in March. The double lines from Nagercoil Town to Kanyakumari, Aralvaimoli –Nagercoil Jn, and Tirunelveli- Melapalayam will be completed by the end of February.Jokatte–Thokur by line doubling work will be completed in March.
Karaikal-Peralam and Chinnasalem-Kallakurichi new lines might be completed in June 2024, he added.
“The section speed of Arakkonam-Jolarpet section has been raised from 110 to 130 kmph. In addition, sectional speed of eight more sections has been increased to 110 kmph. We have planned 12 more sections for increased speed of 110 kmph, totalling 374 km.”
As part of Mission 100% railway electrification, 216 route km (RKM) was electrified in the zone in 2023. With this, 91.3% of route km in SR has got electrified, totalling 4,608 electrified rkm, till December 31.
Track maintenance work was also a focus area. There was great progress in tamping of track, points & crossings, deep screening of plain track and points & crossings with ballast cleaning machines and other track works, he added.
Detailing the achievements, Singh said the zone’s gross earnings stood at about Rs 9,482 crore till December 2023 of the financial year, 5% higher than that in the corresponding period of 2022-23.
With 578 million passengers travelling during the period, the zone recorded 13% growth in passenger traffic and 8% growth in passenger revenue during the period.
Singh appreciated the efforts of Railway Protection Force (RPF) and said 1,215 runaway children were rescued and rehabilitated. Lives of 27 passengers were saved by RPF personnel during the year.
Earlier, unfurling the National Flag, Chennai divisional railway manager B Vishwanath Eerya said the division would complete installing additional CCTV cameras at 128 railway stations by July 2024.
He said the division recorded a total revenue of Rs 3,236.56 crore so far in the current financial, which is an increase of 4.7% over the corresponding period of last year.
The division handled 1.15 million passengers every day, he added.
Chennai Division has achieved a loading performance of 7.413 million tonne till December of this FY,” he said
Work on the passenger information system at 89 stations was progressing in full swing, he said.
