Iit-m To Study Upgrade Of Two Mrts Stations | Chennai News – Times of India

CHENNAI: An IIT Madras team will conduct a study at Thirumayilai and Thiruvallikeni MRTS stations to recommend that CMRL upgrade the stations on a par with those on the metro rail network. The study is part of the process for metro rail to takeover MRTS.
This includes commercial development and passenger amenities. Based on the report, CMRL will float a tender to appoint an agency that will recommend upgrading all 17 MRTS.Officials said Southern Railway may continue to operate MRTS trains for a minimum of two years until the stations are revamped and new air-conditioned trains are procured.
“The study is to assess the cost of property development and other upgrades like automatic fare collection, parking, and a CCTV camera network that will make MRTS stations meet metro rail standards. The report might come in a month’s time. Based on that, we will float a tender to get a cost estimate for all the other stations,” a metro rail official said.
“We will also prepare a detailed project report, which will have details like passenger traffic, integration with phase 2, the number of coaches needed, and other critical equipment and passenger amenities needed for operations. With the DPR, we will seek funding. Southern Railway will continue train operations till we upgrade stations and procure trains,” the official said. Officials chose Thiruvallikeni MRTS for the study as it is closer to the beach, and it may be the best route to reach the Marina Beach once St Thomas Mount stations are integrated into phase 2.
The station was also chosen because it will be integrated with phase-2 metro station, which will be an interchange for corridors 3 and 4. Recently, a CMRL team inspected the Thirumayilai and Thiruvallikeni MRTS stations.
Officials said they visited the stations as talks between TIDCO and Southern Railway on the terms for takeover are nearing the final stage. CMRL will then assign a firm to conduct an assessment, including commercial development, passenger amenities, and submit a report to cmrl with a cost estimation.
