Kolkata: Kolkata Municipal Corporation will introduce two more electric furnaces at Siriti crematorium, taking the total number to four.
The work to revamp the crematorium began on Saturday in presence of mayor Firhad Hakim. It will also offer a wooden pyre to citizens who prefer to cremate following traditional norms, said Tarak Singh, MMiC, who is the local councillor.
The mayor on Wednesday led a delegation to Siriti crematorium.Hakim has given a go-ahead to its modernization proposal. KMC has asked a consultancy firm to prepare a detailed report. According to plans, the new crematorium will be built on 14 cottahs.
The civic body will also construct a two-storey rest room. A car parking space will be developed within the complex.
The KMC will dig a pond where the kin can perform rituals.
