Nilgiris: Ooty, the hill station in Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris district, experienced a significant drop in temperature on Sunday, reaching a minimum of 1.3°C. The cold weather, accompanied by frost, transformed the serene town into a mini-Kashmir.
However, the bitter cold disrupted the daily lives of the residents, who sought warmth by gathering around bonfires. The district of Nilgiris witnesses frost every year from November to February, but this year it arrived later in January due to storms and rain. Ooty City and its surrounding areas such as Kanthal, Pinker Post, and Thalai Kunta were covered in ice. The frozen water drops on the lawns created a picturesque scene, resembling frozen lumps. Areas like Ooty Racecourse, Thalikunda, Kanthal, and Pinkerpost appeared as if a white carpet had been laid over the frosty green lawns. Some parked vehicles even accumulated up to an inch of snow. Unfortunately, the snowfall has caused inconvenience for many people, leading to symptoms like runny noses, coughing, and rashes on hands and feet. The extreme cold in the village, situated in the higher altitudes of Tamil Nadu, forced the locals, unaccustomed to such low temperatures, to stay indoors and disrupted their daily routines. The grasslands in the Nilgiris district turned into a magical wonderland, with fresh dew drops, also known as white frost, covering the green grass. This spectacle was observed in various areas of the hill station, including Ooty Nagar, Thalikunda, HPF, Kanthal, and Fingerpost. Residents faced difficulties starting their cars as up to an inch of ice accumulated on parked vehicles. The local meteorological officials stated that there has been a significant difference between day and night temperatures in recent weeks, with the maximum temperature reaching around 25 degrees Celsius. It is important for the residents to take necessary precautions to stay warm during this cold spell.
